Awakening to Whiteness
October 17 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Awakening to Whiteness is a series for white identified people to begin to do the work of healing racial karma confronting systemic and personal racism. Predominantly white Buddhist sanghas are often blind to the ways racism shows up in our centers and yet, the legacy of racism, embedded in our cultural and social fabric, continues to cause great suffering. This well crafted series offers an avenue for white identified Buddhists to play a role in alleviating racial harm. It creates a space for racial healing as an essential part of practice. The intent is to support practitioners in the creation of a just and sustainable society for everyone.
Awakening to Whiteness uses a Buddhist created curriculum used by dozens of sanghas to look more deeply into our biases, our collective history, and our collective responsibility. Group guidelines, including rotating facilitators, offer a safe space to learn and explore personal experience and insights. About four to six hours of reading/ video assignments are suggested as preparation for each meeting.
Awakening to Whiteness will meet every other month on the second Sunday of the month from 1-3. Participants are expected to commit to all 6 meetings.
